As a result of alleged N130m debt to private waste collectors, refuse has taken over Akure, defacing the erstwhile serene city.
It was learnt that the debt has necessitated stoppage of waste collection by the operators.
A visit round the town confirmed the unhealthy state, as Isikan, Oba Adesida, Oyemekun, Arakale, and Old Garage, were indeed littered with refuse , as residents dumped their waste indiscriminately on the roads.
An unconfirmed source said, “The government owes the refuse collection firms N130m. Some of them have not been paid since March 2020 “.
Concerned residents called on the government to take urgent steps to reverse the state of things, as it might explode into an epidemic.
