Nigerians have been reacting to the statement credited to Odua People’s Congress Founder, Dr Frederick Faseun, that there is nothing for the country to cheer at fifty one. He had been credited as saying that with so many graduates roaming the streets in search of jobs, insecurity in the land , increasing spate of killings and kidnappings, leadership crisis among other socio economic and political challenges the country is facing, there is no reason to celebrate the 51st independence anniversary.
Is it the unemployment of our youths?. Is it the spate of killings and bombings?. Is it the state of insecurity?. There is really nothing to celebrate unless to thank God for the existence of the country called Nigeria”.
Mr Ayo Opadokun , National Coordinator Coalition of democrats for electoral reforms lends credence to Dr Faseun’s position. He said the country should observe a moment of reflection as the nation clocks 51.” Government should do something about the state of insecurity, so that investors can come in to invest. No investor will come to where government has given a shoot at sight order”.
A former Governor of Anambra state, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife however disagrees with Dr faseun. According to him, President Goodluck Jonathan has been making frantic efforts to move the nation forward. “ There is the Boko Haram confronting him. At least we should commend that despite these challenges, he is focused on his agenda for the nation”. Other Nigerians have also supported Dr Ezeifs’s position. Mr Dapo Olorunfemi, said , “ I think it is unnecessarily pessimistic to say there is nothing to cheer about. Yes, things are really bad. But life is about the good , the bad and the ugly. Is it not this same country that the condemned Sagamu Ore road is now in a good shape. Is it not here we have the likes of Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola ( SAN) making waves?. Alhaji Dangote, condemned for solely commanding the sugar industry, now owning more industries than anyone, employing hundreds of thousand of Nigerians. Mike Adenuga’s Globacom now an international brand. People seeing millions on the road and handing over to government.
