It was a somber scene in Akure, as members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ondo State chapter, protested the non payment of three months pension allowances, gratuities, five years arrears of 33% and other benefits.
As they besieged the Governor’s Office, under the scorching sun, their placards had such inscriptions as, “ Pay Our 3 Months Arrears, We Are Dying of Hunger and Starvation”, “ Save Our Souls, We Are Oil Producing State” and “ Why Owing Us Our Entitlements?”.
Chairman , Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Akure South, Mr Akin Adubuola, said they had been outrightly abandoned though the served government with all their capacities. They described their entitlements as their right, as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The pensioners said they had been plagued by sudden deaths, prolonged sicknesses and sufferings due to the non-payment of their outstanding arrears and other entitlements.
Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Union Matters, Mr Dayo Fadahunsi, implored the pensioners to exercise patience. He explained that the delay was due to the financial crisis presently rocking the country.
