In recent times, criminal herdsmen have been rampaging, raping, destroying, maiming, and killing people in many states of the Federation, including the state of Ondo.

The security problem has become so widespread that no segment of Nigerian society is spared.

Worse, the Nigerian police seem to have been overwhelmed by the increasing number of crimes committed by these bandits.

Criminal herdsmen illegally occupied the thick forests of five (5) of the southwestern states of Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, Ogun, and Osun, bringing their victims to pay ransoms and possible executions.

The situation has become so precarious that peasants are no longer able to do their farm work, and our highways are no longer safe for commuters.

As a result, the six southwest Governors led by Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu of Ondo State held an emergency meeting on the deplorable security situation in the region and resolved that it was necessary to have a regional security outfit under their exclusive control to arrest the ugly trend.

On 9 January 2020, the governors launched a security outfit called “Operation Amotekun” in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, to defend the region from rising security, marked by indiscriminate killings, kidnappings, banditry, and destruction of farmlands by Fulani herdsmen.

The Amotecun Corps is a child of necessity born out of the need to explore other means of securing communities that have been at great risk.

Expectedly, the initiative triggered serious controversies across the country, as the Federal Government, through the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, described the initiative as illegal.

The Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu inaugurated the Ondo State Security Network Agency, i.e., the Amotekun Corps at Gani Fawehinmi Arcade in Akure, the state capital in August 2020, to curtail the menace of criminal herdsmen in the state.

The Governor has left no stone unturned to have a more secured Ondo State.

It is important here to commend the efforts of Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the Ondo State Commander of Amotekun Corps, and his team for their exploits in the last six months in combating crimes in the state.

Under his able leadership, many bandits and other criminal elements have been napped while a number of kidnapped victims have been rescued from their abductors.

And just on the penultimate Sunday, the Amotekun Corps broke off the illegal operations of some gold miners in Owo state Forest Reserves while on a mission to extricate criminals from the Forests.

No fewer than 14 (14) persons involved in the illegal activities were apprehended by the members of the Corps.

More than 50 criminals are being prosecuted directly by Amotecun, the first in the region to secure this giant leap.

In a turbulent period like this, we need a resilient leader who has a positive attitude and a sense of duty to provide solutions and support his people. Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu is demonstrating absolute leadership not only in the State of Ondo and the South West.

On many occasions, he had gone against the major authorities to protect the interests of his citizens, regardless of what they might have cost him personally.
